Did you know that in the early days of trails around Pleasant Lake. the North Oaks community, residents had their own ski hill? James J. Hill, Jr. was an avid and accomplished skier. He skied Scandinavia, Europe, and, of course, the Western US, and was referred to as a 'fanatical' skier. He also shared his passion for physical fitness: Hill made sure that North Oaks out of the chalet. Yes, North Oaks had had playgrounds. baseball diamonds, hockey rinks, polo fields, soccer fields, riding stables, and riding and walking might get hurt, and you might be liable: That was the end of that" (p. 31). Hill's connection with Austrian ski instructors went back to the 1930s when Nazism was on the rise into Nazi Germany was Lugi. Lugi went on to work at Sun Valley. IDand became head instructor for a resort at Lake Tahoe. Although Hill hated a MN winter, he did manage to enjoy its perks and make it possible for early North Oaks residents to do so as well. Never one to skimp, Hill's parents brought a ski instructor from Austria to give lessons in Germany and AUstria. Hill's son remembers: "He rescued a couple of Austrian ski instructors from the clutches of the Anschluss" (p. 127).
