A Word From Marc: My friend who handles my stock investments called me the other day. I always feel sorry for him because the market is the market and it's designed to go up and down but the poor guy gets knocked around a bit at times. People get so riled up about the stock market. I don't understand Stocks. It's not what I do. I do joke with him that I think I can normally outperform him in real estate. Owning real estate is always a good investment. There are exceptions in certain areas of the country of course but we are lucky in Minnesota where it's still reasonably affordable to own a house. With the exception of a few years around 2008 we can count on at least a 2 to 3% growth. There are times when we have gained a 15 to 20% growth in one year. In the last three years we have seen awesome appreciation in our homes. Owning a house is different than stock. Stocks might be a little more liquid but real estate is steady and reliable. It's where I sleep. It's where I barbecue. My lawnmower is parked there! It's an investment that I can actually use and it can bring me joy. My job can literally make people happy while they tinker in their garage. Real estate is also one of those few investments that you really only need to use 10 or 20% cash to buy a house and yet you gain appreciation on the full price. That's a great use of money. Tax advantages? Lots of them. I guess my point is out of all the investments I can make my house or cabin is not one that I have to worry about. Don't worry your house is making money while standing in your kitchen.
