A Word From Marc: When I was a kid, my mother would frequently asked me to go over to one of our neighbors and to borrow a cup of sugar or maybe some Maxwell House coffee. Once in a while it was a half a bottle of wine from Sal's house. Sal and Rose were from Italy and always had the best wine. Almost weekly I would go across the street or next door on these fetching errands. This was a common theme in our neighborhood growing up. If you needed some ingredients for that cheesecake but couldn't make it to the grocery you just sent your kid to your neighbors. It wasn't limited to food supplies. It could be a Philips screwdriver. I even recall having to carry a vacuum once. It was an amazing system of bartering. Today I can't remember the last time I went over to the neighbors to borrow anything. I just get in my car and drive to Target or the hardware store. Yeah, I know we have Amazon but sometimes you need that crescent wrench right now! What got me thinking about this was that I posted I have a canoe down at the beach and that I encouraged anybody who wanted to go and use it. I received an overwhelming amount of responses from people who thought this was amazing as if it was a big deal. It's not. It's easy and even fun. I'm going start doing this with my lawnmower, maybe my car. We should rely on our neighbors and community more than we do these days. I still remember all the conversations I had with my neighbors as a kid while holding some eggs I was bringing back home. Hey I'm just throwing it out there. Let's rely on each other a little more often. Go borrow a cup of something. As I reported last month, Beth and the pool boy put their house up for sale and immediately got three offers. I promise I'm not making this stuff up. The market in North Oaks is probably one of the strongest markets in the Twin Cities. I have another one coming on the market. It's a cute mid-century with awesome views. Check it out. In the meantime, feel free to knock on my door anytime.
